It isn’t a question of justifying ourselves, it’s the true values of the situation that are really important. The moment we saw one another again, we knew it was no use going on. We knew it instantly really, although we tried to pretend to ourselves that we didn’t. What we’ve got to be thankful for is that we made the break straight away, and not later.
ESTUARY:
The phone rings and I know it’s her. I push my chair way from my desk putting distance between my body and my telephone. Frozen and staring wide-eyed, the shrill sound grows louder… Charlie pokes his head around the doorframe and looks at me. He has a tea towel in his hands and is wiping a white plate. I shake my head. He nods and returns to the kitchen. The phone continues to jangle. It seems neverending, but eventually stops.
COCKNEY:

I wanna talk seriously with the rest of you, I don’t wanna spend the night takin’ the piss, comin’ on with the funnies because that’s the only way I can get into conversation. I didn’t want to come to your house just to play the court jester. I don’t want to be myself. Me? What’s me? YORKSHIRE:
